Abstract

BB Cream, which stands for “Blemish Balm” or “Beauty Balm,” was first developed by a German dermatologist, Dr. Christine Schrammek in the 1960’s. The initially unnamed product was formulated to provide coverage and protection for patients who had recently undergone facial peels, surgery, and laser treatments.

The said ointment remained relatively obscure not until the 1980’s. From its medical origin, the BB Cream concept was repositioned by South Korean cosmetic companies as an all-in-one daily facial beauty product. The market sales of BB Cream significantly increased when well-known show business artists from Japan and South Korea, most especially K-pop and K-drama stars, as they have been called, endorsed the product.

In fact, BB Cream sales reportedly account up to 13% of the beauty cosmetic market in South Korea. It later on spread all throughout Asia, then to Europe, United States, and the rest of the Western market in 2011. The newly discovered product has become a mainstay. It created a large trend in beauty blogs and cosmetic analysts’ columns since then, and Google searches for the term "BB Cream" have increased exponentially.

BB Cream introduced and popularized as a multifunction cream, the product’s ability to give both natural skincare benefits and makeup benefits lead to its consistent sales. About 8 out of 10 beauty shoppers show good remarks and prefer beauty products that offer multiple benefits. The customers’ valuable insights and satisfaction have helped the BB Cream manufacturers and producers expand and innovate further. Moreover, 4 out of 5 people who have tried BB Cream were pleased and that they will buy the product again.
